An extender is a product that when added to water based paint, glaze or medium slows the drying time. This additive is added in a small amount to most paints and glazes to enable the user to work with the paint and yet have it dry in a reasonable time. If more time is needed for manipulation of a glaze or paint, then adding your own small amount of extender helps keep the paint from drying so fast.
