A varnish protects all the work that you have done on your project, whether it is a wall, furniture, craft project or canvas painting. It keeps out all environmental elements. A varnish is commonly called a “topcoat”. Several layers of varnish are always suggested for total protection. Many times a project is “considered done” just before this final coating. Not only does it protect what has been done, it intensifies it. The colors pop out and glow, giving a deep beautiful look that cannot be achieved any other way.
There are 3 common sheens in varnish, matte, satin and gloss.
Matte – very flat with little to no sheen. It still gives an intensity of color but no real shine.
Satin- can be called semi-gloss. Give a little shine and is in the middle between matte and gloss.
Gloss – the most shine. A high reflection with great intensity of color.
